Belinda Carlisle Of The Go-Go’s Tells All
Back in the 80’s punk rock and new wave music was the way to go. Girl bands were on the rise, and the Go-Go’s were oh so hot! Front vocalist Belinda Carlisle, struggled with drugs, weight and the pressure of stardom which almost caused her to crash and burn. The press liked to refer to her as plump yet pretty, which didn’t sit well with Belinda.
The Go-Go’s
Belinda was hanging out with the likes of John Belushi, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and INXS. Before each performance, Belinda and band mates would drink and sometimes do cocaine to get ready. She didn’t think it was a big deal at the time. In 1984, she was introduced to Morgan Mason, the son of famous actor James Mason, and quickly fell head over heels…(no pun intended). They moved in together with Mason having no idea that she was an addict. Belinda told BSW that she would sneak out to get high leaving notes saying she went to the store.
Morgan eventually discovered her secret and Belinda worked hard to get clean. She married Mason and released her first solo album in 1986, but her old insecurities came back to haunt her. Having slimmed down, the press now referred to Belinda as slim & sexy. She was tired of the press always pointing out her weight. It got to the point where she was obsessed with being thinner than everyone else. Before she knew it, she was weighing herself several times throughout the day and exercising obsessively.
In 1990, while on the reunion tour with the Go-Go’s, Belinda started up again with drugs. It wasn’t until she discovered she was pregnant that she stopped, afraid that she would hurt her unborn child. However, she did continue to drink a glass of wine each day and when her son was born, he weighed only 3 lbs. 13 ounces. Belinda told BSW, “this was the scariest time of my life. I was so thankful when Duke finally grew and thrived.”
